PDF to Markdown

Help: PDF to Markdown

  • The tool reads the PDF's digital text, rebuilds the lines in reading order (Arabic and right-to-left included) and turns them into Markdown: large-type lines become headings (# to ####), bullets and numbers become lists, and the lines of one paragraph are joined.
  • You can remove repeated headers, footers and page numbers, separate pages with a horizontal rule and choose whether to join lines. The result appears in an editable box: fix it, copy it or download an .md file.
  • Honest limits: headings are a deduction, not a certainty; tables, multiple columns, images, formulas, footnotes, bold and italics are not reproduced. The more complex the layout, the more corrections it needs. 100 MB and 500 pages at most.
  • A scanned PDF has no text to extract: the tool says so and points you to “OCR PDF”. A PDF that asks for a password is not handled here, and the tool never tries to get around it.

Extract the text of a PDF as Markdown: headings guessed from character size, lists, joined paragraphs. A starting point to proofread, not a faithful copy.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Markdown faithful to the PDF?

Not always, and we do not promise it. Headings are guessed from character size and lists from bullets; tables, columns, images and text formatting are not reproduced. Plan on a proofread.

Why is the result empty or unreadable?

Either the PDF is a scan (page images, no text): use “OCR PDF” first; or the PDF's font prevents the letters from being recovered, which the tool reports when it detects it.

Is my PDF sent to a server?

No. The text is extracted and converted in your browser; the document and the Markdown never leave your device.
