VAT & Sales Tax Calculator

Help: VAT & Sales Tax Calculator

  • Say whether your amounts are excluding or including tax, enter the rate, then one or more prices: the net total, the tax and the gross total update live.
  • The rate is free-form (no rate is imposed); buttons offer common rates. Each line can have its own rate, handy for multi-rate invoices: the breakdown by rate is shown.
  • Calculations are done in cents. “Per line” rounds each line then adds up, like an invoice; “On the total” adds each rate's base before rounding the tax.
  • Decimal quantities are accepted (2.5 kg), comma or dot, Arabic digits as input. Currency is optional and free.
  • Rates are not updated automatically: check the rate that applies to your situation. A calculation tool, not tax advice.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get the price before tax from a tax-inclusive price?

Divide the gross by (1 + rate ÷ 100). For example, 120 including 20% tax: 120 ÷ 1.2 = 100 net, i.e. 20 of tax. It is not “gross − 20%”, which would give 96.

Why does the total change between per-line and on-total rounding?

Each line rounded to the cent can drift a few cents from the tax computed on the sum. Three lines of 0.33 at 10% give 0.09 of tax rounded one by one, but 0.10 computed on 0.99. Follow the rule of your invoicing.

Can I use a decimal rate or several rates on one invoice?

Yes. The rate accepts decimals (7.5, 5.5) and each line can have its own rate. The result groups base and tax by rate.
